HWA CO Short Story Intensive—May 2024

HWA Colorado is pleased to introduce a free, virtual course on writing short horror stories, HWA CO Short Story Intensive, hosted by author Kari J. Wolfe. For each course, a class of seven students will read and deconstruct published short horror stories to see what makes them work, then workshop each other’s stories.

Spaces are now available for May 2024.
Participants must commit to all for sessions: Thursday, May 9; Thursday, May 16; Thursday, May 23; and Tuesday, May 28.
Time: 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm MT, spillover available until 10 pm.
Location: A Zoom link will be provided and sessions are not recorded.

Each week, we will discuss two short stories from the online horror magazines (example: Nightmare Magazine, The Dark). We will take a look at these stories from both the perspective of a reader of dark speculative fiction as well as a writer of the same to see what we can learn from these stories about writing and what kind of stories each magazine accepts.

For the second half of the meeting, we will discuss two short stories from two members of the group. Each group member is to write or have a story they want to workshop during the month. Because of the time commitment, we will only workshop one of each participant’s stories during this time.

We will be taking a look at these stories from, again, both perspectives, as a reader and a writer, with an eye as to how to improve or make the story better.

At the end of the fourth session, a feedback form will be sent via HWA CO anonymously so participants can give feedback, suggestions, or ideas for further sessions.

Requirements: Participants must be committed to each session (4 sessions total).
